I want to emphasize, though, that as I wrote in the post, this is not a comprehensive list of critical works that I think all poets should read, nor even of all critical works that I have found interesting, important, and/or useful. It's a list of the critical works that were most influential in shaping my thinking about poetry. Obviously, such a list will be different for each individual.

I will say, though, that Spring and All, though it is a fascinating blended-genre work that contains many interesting ideas about poetry, is not to my mind a critical work. And though I love WCW's poetry, his essays haven't had much influence on my own thoughts about poetry.

As for Empson, I adore Some Versions of Pastoral, but, though it's full of wonderfully suggestive material, it didn't particularly influence my ideas about poetry as such. And I found Seven Types of Ambiguity a bit too involuted.

Thank you, Brian, for your kind words about this blog and about my introduction to my anthology. A longer (and more polemical) version of that introduction has appeared in Pleiades under the title "One State of the Art." It can be found on the Pleiades web site and on the Poetry Daily web site.

Thanks again to all for reading and responding.Reginald Shepherdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11965170916626482963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4014415529871703586.post-49195207573980225152007-04-14T07:48:00.000-06:002007-04-14T07:48:00.000-06:00The New Sentence & Spring & All were the two I was...The New Sentence & Spring & All were the two I was most, for want of a better way to say it, allowed by.

Good list.John Gallaherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02112997671155171626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4014415529871703586.post-58451231929201488752007-04-13T13:00:00.000-06:002007-04-13T13:00:00.000-06:00What you reveal on your blogconsistently inspires ...What you reveal on your blog
consistently inspires me. A student of poetry who wanted to start building a theoretical language for his or her practice could do a lot worse than to begin with these texts. (Though as far as New Critics go I think I'd prefer Empson to Blackmur; maybe I'm just fond of Empson's eccentricities.)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06846875103765617419noreply@blogger.com
