A Blog Post of Interest

Robert Philen has an incisive recent post on his blog about "Art That's More Interesting to Think About Than to Experience." We've all had the experience of an artwork that was neither particularly interesting nor pleasurable but was interesting to think about or talk about, and of finding that those thoughts were more interesting than the artwork which incited them.

Ah, isn't that almost the definition of postmodern art? For a somewhat more sympathetic definition than "art that's more interesting to think about than to experience," it might be rephrased something like "art that empowers the audience by inspiring them to think rather than dominates them by subjecting them to an 'experience' controlled by the artist much as they are subjected to other media experiences controlled by politicians, corporations, etc." Have I completely misunderstood?
